Reviewed for 2026 · current Task 2 question types

Task 2 essay questions, sorted by what they ask.

A bank you can filter by topic and by the five question types, each with the structure it actually wants and the mistake that caps it.

Why type matters more than topic. Most candidates prepare topics and walk in unready for the question. A discussion essay that forgets to give an opinion, an "outweigh" question with no verdict, a two-part question that answers one part: these lose Task Response marks no matter how good the English is. So sort by type, learn the structure each wants, then practise.

02The five question types

Each type wants a different shape.

Pick a type to see the structure it expects and the one error that quietly caps the band. This is the part a list of questions never tells you.

A scan reads structure. Only a human reads the argument.

The bank and the scan get your shape right. Whether the ideas land, whether the grammar is accurate, and the band you are sitting at, those need a human read. Send a Task 2 ahead of a lesson and I mark it against the four criteria, line by line.
